Scotland High Output Topographical Surveys Summary:
Severn Partnership Ltd were commissioned by Fugro RailData to provide assistance with the required topographical survey and OLE design requirements of the project in October 2015. Initial site works began in November 2015 and are currently ongoing. The project concentrated along the Scotland Territory, consisting of 61 worksites, a total of 108,824yds. Severn Partnership are committed to continuous improvement, the introduction of the Rila 360 train mounted survey system by Fugro RailData and our ability to manage and extract mass data sets has led to significant advances in how data is collected, managed and extracted to deliver the outputs required by the High Output design team. Further developments in automated extraction techniques are currently being researched to further reduce processing time and costs.
The use of these train-borne systems provides Network Rail with a clear and defined health and safety benefit. The use of the system dramatically minimises the need for surveyors to be on or near the line during the collection of the topographical survey data. The laser scan data being used as a source for real world feature extraction and digitisation. The final survey data deliverables are identical to that created through conventional land survey. Conventional surveying of the first four delivery sites by Severn Partnership as a proof of concept. The resulting data sets were interrogated for positional accuracy and comparison for all detail covered by the survey remit; track alignment, cess & line side detail, structure gauging and OLE heights and staggers. The resulting comparison values and QC reports were issued to the Network Rail High Output team for review and accepted prior to processing of Rila 360 data for further sites.

Project Overview:
Track Alignment Survey information was recorded at 5m intervals by Fugro RailData’s Rila 360 train mounted system, with data collected for the entire WCM1 & ECM8 route. Site Specific areas were then processed and delivered to Severn Partnership to process in CAD and further QC the data.
In addition Severn Partnership were responsible for producing SSoWP’s and Task Briefing Sheets, arranging track access, attendance at pre-possession PICOP meetings and providing the required safety critical staff needed to complete the reduced site works.
Delivery of this project involved working in collaboration with Network Rail High Output Design team, Fugro RailData, PBH OLE Design and Seaton Rail. Survey Works are currently ongoing, with project work under construction. Fugro RailData in conjunction with Severn Partnership have recently had this contract extended to cover a further year in Scotland.
