3D Modelling & Laser Scanning a Railway Corridor Summary:
The Scan2BIM team at Severn Partnership were commissioned to laser scan and 3D model 500 metres of railway corridor and four listed bridges.
Project Overview:
Between 2014 and 2016, Network Rail commissioned the Bath Corridor Civils Works (Great Western Electrification programme). to install 25KV Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) equipment on the Great Western Mainline. A critical and complex part of the route passes through the Bath World Heritage Site. The works at Bath included; raising parapet heights to line side retaining walls, landscaping, works to two listed bridges, OLE bespoke foundations/masts as well as works to the main station.
As the corridor is situated in a World Heritage site and has various Listed structures, Severn Partnership were commissioned to laser scan a 500m stretch of railway which included four listed bridges to facilitate design and listed building consent.

The scan data was collected over two night-possessions with a Leica P20.
Once the scan data was processed, using Autodesk Revit our modelling team produced a 3D model to LOD4, including all historical features. The model comprised of the four listed structures as well as 500 metres of retaining walls, topography and tracks.
