This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re taking the opportunity to reflect on the value of apprenticeships and the impact they have on the surveying industry. At Severn Partnership, we’re committed to nurturing young talent, and equipping them with the skills and experience needed to build long and rewarding careers.

Two of our team members, Emilia and Tyrese, started their journeys with us as apprentices and have since become full-time professionals within Severn Partnership. Their journeys highlight the incredible benefits of apprenticeships and how they serve as a solid foundation for a career in the survey industry.

Emilia’s journey

Emilia joined Severn Partnership in 2021 after finishing college, and started a two-year apprenticeship that provided her with both industry knowledge and financial independence.

I think it was a brilliant way to begin a career as I could learn a certain skill set whilst earning, and this gave me a really good head start in the industry”, she explains.

Unlike the traditional university route, Emilia’s apprenticeship allowed her to gain hands-on experience while also securing her future financially. “Instead of living in student debt, I managed to buy a home at the age of 20, as well as having a specialised job role and goals to work towards.

Since completing her apprenticeship, Emilia has expanded her skill set within other specialist services, including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). This experience has helped her grow professionally, and she continues to develop her expertise within the industry.

Her advice for those considering an apprenticeship in surveying? “The worst that can happen is you don’t like it, so give it a chance—you might meet some people you’ll be friends with for life!”

Tyrese’s journey

Tyrese took a different path, starting his apprenticeship straight after secondary school. He saw this as an opportunity to gain practical experience early on, allowing him to progress quickly within the industry.

An apprenticeship gave me skills and experiences that allowed me to be ahead of other people my age or older within the industry”, Tyrese shares.

For him, the appeal of an apprenticeship was clear—he wanted to gain qualifications while also earning a salary.

This has led to having more financial freedom in my life, rather than being stuck as just a student learning at college all day and being stuck with student debt.

Since completing his apprenticeship, Tyrese has developed into a specialist within his role, a position that many his age are still working toward. His journey demonstrates how apprenticeships provide a fast-track to professional success, with real-world experience setting individuals apart in the job market.

His advice to aspiring apprentices? “Gain the most out of the opportunity taken, as there are many roles to choose from in the industry. By finishing the course, you end up with many transferable skills to take with you.

The success of Emilia and Tyrese proves that apprenticeships offer young professionals not just valuable skills and knowledge, but financial stability and career progression.

If you’re considering a future in surveying, an apprenticeship could be the perfect starting point. This National Apprenticeship Week, we celebrate the achievements of our former apprentices and encourage others to explore this rewarding career path.
