Rothera Research Station – 3D Laser Scan Survey Summary:
Severn Partnership recently published, Antarctica: Life in a Hostile Land in connection with an exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery. At the beginning of last year, we were asked by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) to survey Halley Research Station. The main project (the relocation of Halley VI), involved a 7 day layover at Rothera Research Station. During the 7 days, we carried out a 3D laser scan of Rothera.
Severn Partnership has a long standing relationship with BAS with 6 staff having completed work in Antarctica in the last 20 years. Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery approached us, to see how we could help. Our in-house animation expert utilised the point cloud data to produce a flythrough of the reality capture data, merged with a UAV drone video provided by BAS.
Seeable’s Involvement:
Our sister company, Seeable was involved in this exhibition project too. Seeable were called in to use a selection of 360 panoramas of the Halley base to create an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience using HTC Vive. The Vive headset will allow users to get a taste of what is is like to stand in Antarctica.
The Exhibition:
The exhibition provides an insight into into our relationship with the most hostile continent on Earth. Antarctica: Life in a hostile land, offers a thrillingly interactive experience with a combination of prized historic exhibits and modern day technology that will allow you to become immersed in the wonders of the Antarctic continent. If you would like to visit the exhibition, you have until 17th September.
