The Project
Severn Partnership delivered a large-scale mobile mapping and spatial survey across the Bristol Temple Quarter regeneration area in Bristol.
The project involved the capture of spatial and topographical data including roads, structures, building footprints and surrounding infrastructure.
Using a combination of mobile mapping, UAV survey and static scanning technologies, Severn Partnership collected detailed survey information while minimising disruption within a busy city-centre location.
Client Brief
The client required a survey solution to establish and record the location, type and dimensions of existing site features across the survey area.
This included:
- Road layouts
- Building footprints
- Structures and site features
- Banks and surrounding infrastructure

Survey Scope
Severn Partnership delivered an integrated survey solution comprising:
- Mobile Mapping
- UAV Survey
- Static Laser Scanning
- Survey Control Network
- Full Point Cloud & CAD Model
- Digital Terrain Model (DTM)
The following technologies were used across the project:
- Leica Pegasus Two Ultimate for mobile mapping
- DJI M300 with DJI P1 for UAV survey operations
- RTC360 for static laser scanning
Challenges and Solutions
Challenge 1: Surveying within a dense urban environment – The project area included a highly built-up city-centre location with significant public activity, multiple side roads and numerous access constraints.
Solution: A combination of mobile mapping, UAV survey and static scanning methods enabled survey data to be collected across different parts of the site while reducing prolonged on-site activity.
Challenge 2: Coordinating access across multiple landowners – Access planning was complicated by the number of stakeholders and property owners within the survey area.
Solution: Communication was carried out in advance and coordinated closely with the client to support access planning and survey activities.
Challenge 3: UAV flight planning within an active commercial area – The survey required careful planning of UAV operations and notification of local businesses.
Solution: Flight paths and UAV operations were coordinated in advance, with local companies notified ahead of survey works to minimise disruption.

Deliverables
Severn Partnership delivered:
- Point Cloud Data
- CAD Plans
- Survey Reports
- Site Imagery
These outputs provided the client with a detailed set of survey information to support planning and development activities.
Project Outcome
The survey methodology enabled large volumes of data to be collected across the site while reducing on-site disruption.
Key project outcomes included:
- Reduced project programme through efficient data capture methods
- Reduced costs compared with traditional survey approaches
- Reduced interference with the public and surrounding businesses
- Improved safety through reduced on-site exposure
- Capture of hard-to-access areas that may otherwise have been difficult to survey
Technical Insight
Urban regeneration projects often involve restricted access, public interfaces and complex site conditions.
Combining mobile mapping, UAV survey and static laser scanning enables survey teams to collect data across a range of environments while reducing prolonged on-site activity and improving coverage of difficult-to-access areas.
