Ground Penetrating Radar Survey Summary:
Using GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) to locate plastic water and gas mains can be very problematic, other than GPR there are very few techniques that are capable of detecting plastic pipes. Modern water and gas mains including private connections are predominantly all now plastic. This makes locating these services very difficult and also increases the possibility of a service strike when undertaking any form of excavation.
Project Overview:
Severn Partnership completed a GPR survey of an area of road where a water leak had occurred. The location of the plastic water pipe was required to inform the excavation crew of where to position their trench. The GPR survey was completed over a dense 0.5m orthogonal grid to ensure the best survey coverage. The GPR system used had a dual frequency antenna to provide both a high resolution and depth penetration. Surface topographic features were also recorded including stop valves, fire hydrant and water meters which were later cross correlated with the post processed GPR results.

Benefits:
Allowed the client to accurately position the location of their trench. This saved them significant time and money on site and also allowed them to accurately plan and implement traffic management.
