Duct Proving Survey for Asset Management
Duct Proving Survey Summary:
Severn Partnership’s utility team completed a Duct Proving Survey for multiple sites, which included proving all cable ducts. The survey information was required for the Facilities Managers allowing them to accurately plan and design for assets such as ticket machines and help points.
The Duct Proving Survey was required to ensure all existing duct routes were free from obstruction and continuity and alignment was good. If any problem areas were detected, the position and distance was recorded so they could be located for further investigation or for repair later on.
To prove the duct route had been surveyed it was a requirement that a polypropylene or other non-biodegradable plastic draw rope or cord with a minimum breaking strain of 550kg is to be provided and secured at each end. Each length of rope was 3m longer at both ends than the duct and secured using bamboo.
Utilising the Manhole Schedules from the Utility Detection Survey a list was derived of potential manhole chambers that required proving. Being able to gather this information before returning to site meant that Severn Partnership knew exactly which manholes were required for proving. This greatly improved safety to the public, as less manholes were required to be opened and also meant lower levels of manual handling for the survey team.
