3D Laser Scanning – Birkenhead Highway Viaduct
3D Laser Scanning – Birkenhead Highway Viaduct Summary:
3D Laser scanning above and below a viaduct to extract topographical survey data, cross sections and assess concrete thickness.
The Survey was completed by one team in two night shifts, a 100m section of viaduct was 3D laser scanned on top and underneath (approx 10mm spacing of points). This allowed for a generation of 10m interval cross sections cut through the point cloud and converted into 2D CAD.
The survey was then linked to Ordnance survey grid and datum, coordinated Via ‘Smartnet’ GPS observations. Column positions and concrete beams were picked up to form a full 3D impression of the structure.
From our data, accurate assessments of concrete thickness down the length of the viaduct were obtained for structural engineers.
